As someone who came up during the time of segregation, Museum founder and director Mamie Hillman has seen profound change in the schools of Greene County, Georgia. Photographs of segregated schools make it crystal clear that separate was not equal in regard to the conditions white and African American students were educated here in Greene County. Still, the teachers and principals who gave their all to African American children during the time of segregation must be celebrated – and also the broader county for the profound cultural shift that took place in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the schools were integrated.
“I’m saying: We didn’t always get it right, but we did get to it, and today, we are proud of the thriving public schools of Greene County. Oh, how far we have come.”
