African American life during the time of slavery in Greene County

For over a century, enslaved African Americans in Greene County – tens of thousands of mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers – prayed, toiled and dreamed of a day when their people would be free. Enslavement has not only been a strain and struggle on African American people in Greene County physically and mentally, but it has been a strain and a struggle on the soul of the people.
